I bought this atlas a couple of years ago, and as the binding was falling apart they were very easy to scan.   I have decided that the atlas itself is not salvageable as at least one map seemed to be missing,  the binding was disintegrating, the spine was missing, and the covers had fallen off.  Thus, I am selling the maps individually in my bookstore, ZephyrusBooks.com, on this page HERE.

There are about 100 maps in the book.  This atlas had maps of all the French Departments and overseas possessions of the time.  Every department of France at the time is represented on its own page, with political, demographic and other information on the reverse Vuillemin issued may version s of this atlas over the years, changing the border details, title decorations, fonts and the like over from edition to edition.   The size would also vary, and while not the larges examples, these are larger than many.

Alexandre Vuillemin (1812-1880) produced a number of atlases, and his maps are noted for the extensive margin illustrations – vignettes, famous people, and views of cities. Each map was titled with a different font, and the fonts, decorations and marginalia changed with each subsequent edition. Later editions were often more elaborate and sometimes larger than the maps I have scanned here.

The date is approximate, but fairly accurate.  I have checked the demographics given for each department against historical population figures, and the match the decade.  The date, 1858, is printed on the large fold out map of France in the rear of the atlas.

These are from a 16 century book: “Portolan atlas of 9 charts and a world map, etc. Dedicated to Hieronymus Ruffault, Abbot of St. Vaast. (Agnese, Battista).  The notes state: Manuscript, pen-and-ink and watercolor, on vellum.

So far I have scanned the first 125 pages or so.   I am posting them in their entirety in THEIR OWN SUB-FOLDER of the atlas’ primary folder.  I have not edited the maps yet so for the time being you will only see these full page images.  I have not re-oriented or retitled them, so maps may be sideways, and two-page maps appear in parts.  They do appear in order, though, and the numbers in the titles correspond to the page numbers.

The maps and images are not that scarce, but remain collectible and are an affordable way for collectors and map enthusiasts to obtain a desirable, vintage 1800′s map.  Late 19th century atlas maps are usually available in one form or another on the market, and I will be selling the originals individually (as the atlas was broken and not sellable in its current condition) on the Old Book Art Originals site:  www.originals.oldbookart.com

Reproductions of many vintage maps and illustrations remain available through the Old Book Art Zazzle Shops:  www.shop.oldbookart.com.   These are often made from much higher resolution files than I am able to store on this site.

A very interesting double hemisphere with polar projections. Terra Australis dominates the south pole, while the Americas are very undefined.

A large crowned double-headed eagle is the backdrop for this interesting map. The African/European Hemisphere sits in the middle, with the American/Pacific hemisphere split in two.

Very colorful borders and decoration make this a beautiful map. Gods and charts of the heavens and zodiacal images line the top margin, while insets of the poles and nature scenes line the bottom. All over, grapes and vines hang in the spaces and margins. California is an island and Australia (New Holland) is not even a full outline.

Insets of the poles and a decorative cartouche adorn the top of this double hemisphere. North America just sort of stops at a random meridian.

Beautiful dark images of gods and angels adorn the corners, with polar projections set between eh hemispheres. California is an island and Australia (New Holland) is very ill defined.

Alexis Hubert Jaillot, 1694, Nova Orbis Tabula, ad usum serenissimi Burgundiæ Ducis

Nicely colored with detailed scenes around the margins. California and Australia (New Holland) show the usual errors for the period.

George Willdey, 1702, A New and Correct Map of the World, Laid down according to the Newest Observations & Discoveries In several different Projections: Including ye Trade Winds Monsoons Variation of the Compass, and Illustrated with a Coelestial Planisphere, the various systems of Ptolomy, Copernicus, and Tycho Brahe.  Together with ye Apearances of the Planets &c.

Lots of insets and details make this a useful periods map. Many maps and charts of the heavens and constellations also are along the margins.

Each hemisphere is supported by two struggling figures. This, along with the very nice backdrop of stars and celestial figures makes this a wonderful map. A lot of details and insets along the upper edge as well.

Nice, basic contrasting colors and a sparse background make this a pretty little map.

Intricately designed and exhaustively detailed, this map packs as much contemporary information about the cosmos as the cartographer could manage. Celestial maps of the constellations, a map of the moon, paths of the comets, an explanation of the seasons, and much more.

A beautiful double-hemisphere map with elaborate border decorations and cartouches. Palm trees adorn the upper corners and laurel leaves are on the center bottom.

1914 Japanese World Map

Available in very large format.

Rather than being organized by the book they come from, they are roughly organized by subject. This is because they were given to me this way by the person who scanned them, William Struse, and I have kept his organization. The images are all public domain and he shared them with me with the understanding they would be offered for free here. He has only thumbnails on his site, and this was an easy way for him to share the larger images with a broader audience.  The maximum size of each image varies greatly.  I have edited them extensively to clean up the dirt and shadows and to darken, brighten, and otherwise enhance the lines.  A lot of text shows through from the obverse side of the leaves, but there was little that could be done about that.  I have been working on the captions, but so far have gotten to only about half of them.  There are close to 500 images in all.

There is no text at all in this book other than a 2 page preface and a list of maps and plans.  The plates are printed single sided, so the quality is very good and there is no bleeding or show-through from other maps.  Flip through the pages, and you get a sense of the ebb and flow of English and British power and empire up until the end of the Victorian era.

Anyway, yes. My own appreciation of old books and their beauty started with atlases, and maps have been something I collect, albeit in a small amateurish manner, for almost my entire life. So, as I did not want to start a whole new website just for the maps that did not happen to be in an atlas, I thought I would add this category for both atlases as well as maps not from atlases.

Some of the images are from other websites such as the Library of Congress. At first I was only going to post my own maps and scans, but upon consideration I decided to post others as well. There are a few reasons for this. One is that many of the LOC and other maps are available in a format that is not easily accessible and usable. Many are unedited and flawed, and I have cleaned these up. Many are also available only as huge files that need to be read by special programs such as Mr. SID. Even then the result is often a 180 MB TIF file that needs to be converted to JPEG and resized before editing can even begin. Thus, I have chosen to take the edited and resized images on place them here for easier access for those who are interested.

I have often thought the answer must be some sort of proprietary selfishness. That does not make a huge amount of sense to me, although I do understand it. I have sold plenty of maps, and I do not think that people who are seeking an original will be deterred from paying if they can have a free facsimile instead. Collectors are collectors and want the real thing. Other people will probably not pay for an original anyway. Additionally, maps are such a great historic and artistic resource that it is a shame to have them so easy to access in usable copies. I know that when I come across a map and am trying to research it I am often stymied by a lack of good images and resources to compare it against. A lot of good resource so exist, which I will be sure to link to soon, but even with these it is sometimes hard to nail down exactly when and where a map came from.

I think part of the drive, other than a simple lack of time is that people who scan the maps want to sell collection of copies or charge a small fee to get them individually. That is fine, but if I own a map and it is small enough to scan I am happy to make copies available. I actually sell copies through Zazzle for people who want a framed print, postcard, T-shirt or the like, but the image is always free for the taking here.

Moll, originally from Germany, worked primarily in London in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.  He was one of the most successful mapmakers of his day, both among rich patrons and the general public.  Complete atlases are hard to come by and extremely expensive.  Individual maps, though, are fairly easy to find.  Many have been hand colored at some point in their history, although it was more common as I understand it for them to be issued uncolored.  I think this map of Europe is very attractive, and it has been one of the more popular pages among maps here.  I put a dat of 1721 on the map because that is what I was told when I bought it.

The Black Sea is also named the Euxine Sea. “Turky in Europe” covers present day Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, etcetera.

Smaller collections such as Michigan State University’s are often more focussed, and when you are lucky they even offer good sized images. I say “smaller” when in fact, to quote their website:

“The Map Library houses a collection of general and thematic maps and atlases for every area of the world. The collection consists of approximately 212,000 sheet maps, 14,000 folded geologic maps, and 4,000 atlases, gazetteers and other reference aids including wall maps, globes, CDs and Internet-accessible resources. The collection is especially strong in Michigan, United States, Canada, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, though all areas are collected at some level. Specialized collections include 19th-21st century Michigan county atlases and plat books; a small Braille map and atlas collection of U.S. states and continents; and Michigan Flood Insurance Rate Maps. The sheet map collection includes maps from the 17th to 21st centuries. A major portion of the sheet map collection consists of United States Geological Survey and U.S. Department of Defense products received through government depository programs. Many foreign topographic maps series are also collected, acquired by purchase and through Library of Congress map exchange programs. Other maps include foreign and domestic city and road maps, and maps from magazine subscriptions such as Petroleum Economist and National Geographic. Most supplementary maps from books in the Main Library are also housed in the Map Library.”

Too frequently when you discover a good archive all you can see are small thumbnails, or zoomable images which cannot be downloaded. Here though, although only a miniscule portion is digitized, those maps that are available are great quality and offered as a quick download in JPEG format as a link on the zoomable Zoomify Viewer page. This is the kind of user friendly map page that I wish more collections would offer.

I did not complain; it was a nice assortment of maps and I eventually ended up selling the collection for more than a fair profit, but not before I scanned the maps. Here they are, 40 out of the 42 that should be here. Some are from a later edition, as I said, and I am not sure what the two missing maps are.

It is hard to find references on the atlas. I am sure it is online somewhere, but I gave up trying to find a compete index. There was nothing in this set but the maps. No title page or other front matter survived.
