Catherine: That was Lisa Cava who posted she had it. She never got back to me, so I do not have it to post.

Katharine: I would not know, but probably not worth much or anything. It was a popular poem and who knows who wrote the verses there and for what reason.

Yes, John, I would be interested in seeing the obit for Rose Hartwick Thorpe who was my grandfather Hartwick Barne's grandmother. The Rose in my name (it is also in my mother's name, my daughter's name and my soon to be born grand-daughter's name) is from Rose Hartwick Thorpe. So needless to say, as a family we are interested in any additional information you might have. It will be interesting to see if the oral family stories have remained faithful to her actual life.

Hi Lisa,

I am so glad you found it, then. I didn't know the poem at all until I found the book, and it's neat to think how it was so popular a few generations ago.

If the obituary is interesting I would be glad to post it here. It might make an interesting addition for anyone who is interested more in the book's history.

Rose H. Thorpe was appointed my grandmother's guardian when my great-grandmother died, at the time my grandmother was 9 years of age; they remained close until Rose's death - and I recently came across the newspaper clipping of Rose's obituary, tucked away in an old book of my grandmother's. I've always heard of the poem and my mom would sometimes quote a few lines, but I've never actually seen the entire poem - so I googled it today just for grins & found this. thank you!
